Time to turn up the volume
Dev has been surprisingly great lately, had a rough patch the past few weeks due to health, but we're back in it now!
Yesterday was an absolute nightmare of a dev day, I committed myself to cleaning up a few things, and before I knew it 6 hours had past and it took far longer to finish the task than anticipated and I just got supremely burned out.
This may be the single most boring youtube video ever uploaded. Just 5 hours straight of painful project management.
ANYWAY! Same old, same old.
I wanted to make this blog because I just had a great idea. I had added these new "attack volumes months back which are just collision volumes taht apply effects and damage to anything within them and generates a particle, so they're very easy to use in lots of ways. They can be a bomb with a singular pulse, or they could be a noxious cloud dealing lots of damage over time with lots of goopy particles. Lots of potential here.. IF I ONLY HAD MORE TIME AND WAS'T SPREAD SO THIN.
Long story short they are is a new all purpose means of f*cking with NPCs. They kinda represent everything i've learned over the years with code and game design and they're supremely more simple and compact and just work so much better than my legacy systems for delivering damage... I almost wonder sometimes If I should just retrofit them, but by the time I added all the new junk all the other systems had they'd be about the same so screw it. EVERYTHING WORKS SO WHATEVER. It's crazy to look back on how little I used to know about cod,e how much it used to hurt my brain trying to get one thing to talk to another thing. And now we can just one two skadoo relatively complex systems. I'm finding we're implementing some really neat mechanics and pounding out bugs really fast and the game is becoming fun pretty fast.
Ok to the point! I just realized I could add all sorta of need volumes to rare pieces of armor. I could create armor that emits a noxious gas and slows all enemies, or maybe it poisons them and causes damage over time. Or maybe it disperses a healing gas that heals you if you stay in the cloud but only after you defeat maybe 5 enemies. Anyhow I just thought it made for a good blog title, and I've been wanting a good excuse to use the attack volumes and now I have one. So i'll probably make a couple unique armor pieces and get them in the game.
Maybe i'll make a mechanic where rare armor disperes these aoe volumes but only if you charge all the way to full so you're very slow. This would make it a much more deliberate action.
