SeaCrit sucks, so does this blog, and that's ok
I fucking LOVE this song, hadn’t heard it in over 20 years when it popped up on internet radio yesterday. I love when you hear that banger you haven't heard in forever and it takes you back to the good ol' days.
Going to be a pretty lame blog today. I just want to regurgitate our thoughts, get them on the internet and go take a nap. I don’t even know why, I guess it’s just habit at this point.
So Unity 6.1 came out today, been using the beta for a while now, and holy moly our frame rate is better than ever, at least in editor. Once we run the build it ends up being lower FPS, but still more than adequate.
Amidst the hoopla of the release I decided to try the WebGPU build and was bracing for having ot revamp my entire project because I thought there was a good chance performance would be better or comparable, and that would mean we could add some fancy fog stuff and who knows what, but the performance was quite a bit worse and the upscaling tech really didn’t seam to up our FPS AT ALL, so we’re kinda just locked into the good old Web 2 tech, and I’m actually perfectly ok with that! Game is performant, it runs great, no reason to kill ourselves trying to get better visuals for where we’re at, we can worry about that in the future when the tech is ready and the game is ready.
I went to sleep last night really happy with how movement was feeling, and the moment I open the project today I am HORRIFIED by how it feels. Going to take a TON of tweaking and tuning, but that’s ok, because we really haven’t been trying to get it to be perfect yet, we’re just trying to get all those dials and necessary functions online so that we CAN seek to make it feel tight and fun. And besides we got a ton of little tiny nuanced things done yesterday like crash penalties and fixes and dive and breach mechanics on top of general polish to the systems themselves, if not the actual feel of movement.
My hope is that in 2 days movement is feeling really tight and then we have plenty of time to get a few items in, some gobble fish and a few new areas with time to spare for the Unity contest I’m hoping. Again trying not to let the contest influence us too much, we’re not overhauling our pipelines to 100% get the best demo possible, but it’s kinda fun to have a little deadline, almost like we’re competing in a Ludum Dare, but I’ve never been able to participate in those because our hands are tied working in SeaCrit!
Just another day… also twitter is not good for our mental health. We need to stay off Twitter, tis a silly place.
Might do a bit of polish later to movement, I'm not stressing about it. We've been working too much of late, some real life stuff going on too.
