Super Chunk
Perfection is the enemy of progress.
The reason we plan, the reason we try to look before we leap is to ensure we get the most out of our creative juices, to enhance the man hours we put in. I keep thinking things over in my head, "Don't work on level 1 first, work on level 2, get good at making levels, then come back and work on the starting areas so they're top notch."
But I don't want to work on level 2, I want to work on level 1 damn it.
If all your planning and all the smart things to do are at odds with what you simply want to open the project and get done, then they're not smart, they're putting you in a creative roadblock. Sometimes the simple answer is "JUST HAVE FUN WITH IT!"
I don't want to say that my goal today is going to be to make the "perfect level section", we don't aim for perfect, we get disheartened by aiming for perfect and falling short. We don't have a usable ambient occlusion, much less a good one. We don't have expensive custom zone assets to throw together, we don't have state of the art water ambient effects, we don't have teams of people pumping out awesome level assets to elevate the game and make making this game amazing a dream.
We've been spending too long making things modular, making things reusable. It's time for us to start making the darned game. "This chunk goes at the start, and it's followed by this chunk that has these enemies." It's time to start making the actual game! I think I have a game plan. First we build up serviceable gameplay areas, then we populate them with enemy fish and interesting to talk to NPC fish.
This isn't rocket science! There's no reason to be freezing up. I keep thinking things have to be perfect, we won't have any chance unless it's perfect! NO GAME IS PERFECT MORON!
So we won't be making the perfect level section, we don't call them level sections anyway, I call them "chunks".
TODAY WE MAKE OUR SUPER CHUNK.
WAS SUPERCHUNK PERFECT!? YOU'RE GOD DAM RIGHT HE WAS!
WE CAN'T ALL BE SUPERCHUNK.
I couldn't believe how supressed superchunk was on google searches, WTF GOOGLE? Does everything in this world have to be sanitized and boring so you can pos like you're tring to protect everyone and their delicate sensiblities! Does hiding superchunk in the corner make the world a better place you SH*TS!?
