More tree, less forest
Going to keep it short and sweet today
I've been overwhelming myself trying to push for this big goal of an actual fun demo, every day I try to wrap up some massive system, pound out another, as if I'm trying to make a great game in a week's time. I'm too obsessed with getting this out there and finding success that I am adhering to a path that guarantees that can't happen.
Good things take time.
So instead of trying to create the entire environment for the entire game in half a day, and then move on to finessing enemy spawns and item designs and doing the work of what would normally be teams of people spending years on that task, I'm going to start with a singular goal: Make a nice world to explore and build that world in a non dumb fuck manner. It's not going to be as gorgeous as some AAA top end work of art, but I'm hoping I can at least throw together something that's kinda fun and fits the play and systems.
Sometimes I htink I should revamp the AI so it can navigate more complex environments, and then i can build out these super complex worlds and do anything. But often it is adhering to the unique restrictions of your project that likwise makes your project unique. There is something to be said for simplicity. Dumb idiot enemies in clean easy to understand areas. These are the building blocks of the greatest games. No one reminisces about being lost for day, being beaten over the head with terribly hard unfair enemies and situations. So I will try to just make it fun.
Not sure if this is going to be better or worse than my goal of attacking and pushing everything at once, maybe I'm only making this blog post to delay getting to work.
Enough blathers! Enough overthinking!
Time to crunch.
Edit: Had a very enjoyable dev session today just building up the world and sorting out a few things. Bosses are promising, world exploration feels promising. Feeling as though things are coming together. I can only do so much as a one man band, but it is what it is. I mean shit, minecraft only had a bunch of cubes so why the hell should I feel like I need super high end art and polish?
